Get ready to compete at Westie Weekend!

2 weeks before the big event, we’ll host two small, role balanced, focused workshops at Dave & Casey’s home studio in Rockville, MD. 

Sunday, May 4th, 2025:

1-2:30pm “Welcome to Jack & Jills!” for newer competitors: Goal setting, cohort-building, tips and strategies for expansive success in WCS J&J contests. Perfect for: People considering entering a J&J contest someday; Newcomer & Novice J&J contestants; any J&Jers seeking practice and mindset focus. $20 ($15 until May 3rd)

3-4:30pm “Insight on Judges & Scoring” for experienced competitors: Dive into judging and scoring in WCS J&J contests. Dance together in prelims and finals formats. Take turns seeing what the judges see. Learn how scoring works in each round. Gain practical insight and shift your perspective in this supportive, fun workshop. $30 ($25 until May 3rd)

Bring your dance shoes, a notebook, and a water bottle.

Kay Newhouse is a joyful, friendly social dancer, as well as an experienced competitor, judge and teacher. She has 20 years of judging experience for newcomer to champion WCS contests across the USA, Canada, Asia, Europe, and New Zealand. She currently serves as a member of the World Swing Dance Council (WSDC) Executive Board and as a liaison to the WSDC International Advisory Committee.

Kay has worked with Dance Jam Productions for many years as co-director for MADjam, Swing Fling, and DCSX, and DJP’s newest event, Westie Weekend. With DJP, she developed “Newcomer Welcome Program” curricula to help welcome new people to our events, established Expectations of Professional Staff guidelines, and wrote a standard-setting Code of Conduct which serves as a model for WCS communities around the world to put community values in writing. In 2023, she was inducted into Global Grand Prix’s West Coast Swing Hall of Icons (Toulouse, France).

Kay holds a master’s degree in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Outside of dance, she is a field supervisor with UMD’s department of Teaching, Learning, Policy and Leadership, and serves on the board of DC Peace Team.
